Take the toll bridge, for example. These days, it’s a charming little crossing, a good spot for a quiet photo and the occasional traffic jam. But rewind a few hundred years, and it was the gateway to adventure — and in one case, something enormous.
In 1255, England’s very first captive elephant marched off a boat and onto Sandwich soil. Its royal journey to the Tower of London began right here, by crossing that very bridge. That legendary stroll now lives on… in our new club badge.
But that’s not the only bit of history stitched into our new look. Fast forward to the 16th century, and Sandwich became a safe haven for Dutch and French refugees fleeing religious persecution. The town welcomed them in, handed over churches, and even gave them a nickname: “The Strangers.”
Far from being outsiders, they brought skills, stories and spirit that transformed the town — a spirit we’re proudly nodding to today. So don’t be surprised when you start seeing #WithTheTown, #TheStrangers, or #BridgingTheGap in our posts.
They’re more than hashtags, they’re a salute to our roots.
Some things are worth keeping.
Some things are worth crossing for.
And some things are worth turning into football folklore.
