Double Success!

Football hotter than the weather!

What a weekend of football it’s been! After Saturday’s huge occasion for the Sandwich Town First Team in the inaugural Barrett Cup Final, we’re sure plenty of people are grateful for the bank holiday weekend to recover and reflect on a memorable day for the club.

Manager Marc Taylor led the side to Whitstable Town’s home ground and had the following to say about the occasion:

"What a day for the football club and for the town.

Under scorching conditions at Whitstable Town Football Club on Saturday afternoon, Sandwich Town FC were crowned Barrett Cup champions after a fantastic performance in front of family, friends and supporters. The weather was hot — but the football on display from Sandwich Town was even hotter.

With both sides looking to finish their seasons on a high, the final began at a fast pace. Sandwich Town settled the quickest and started to take control of possession through midfield, creating several dangerous opportunities in the opening stages.

Despite the positive start, Chilham Reserves took the lead early on, against the run of play, after a long free-kick caused problems for the Sandwich defence, allowing the Chilham striker to finish into the bottom corner.

Sandwich Town responded brilliantly and never looked rattled. A slight tactical tweak and substitution helped shift the momentum back in their favour, leading to a deserved equaliser.

Regan Garrett, who was outstanding throughout the afternoon, produced a superb through ball for Jamie Sumner, who timed his run perfectly before calmly lifting the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

Chilham Reserves still had their chances and it took a fabulous, athletic save from Sandwich Town Goalkeeper Lukas Jones, who turned the ball over the cross bar from close range, to keep the scores level.

The sides went into half-time level, with everything still to play for.

The second half saw five substitutions and a switch to a 3-5-2 formation — and from that moment on, it was all Sandwich Town. The football on display was a joy to watch, with flowing attacking moves, dangerous crosses and wave after wave of pressure.

Danny Broughton, the league and club’s top goal scorer, then produced a delicious through ball for the impressive Jamie Sumner once again, who raced through on goal and chipped the goalkeeper for a second time to put Sandwich ahead. 2-1 to Sandwich Town!

Then came a moment of real magic.

Regan Garrett picked the ball up on the right-hand side, beat his man and unleashed an unstoppable strike from around 30 yards into the top right-hand corner — a goal worthy of winning any final. 3-1 to Sandwich Town!

Sandwich Town were now firmly in control and, with just two minutes remaining, talisman Danny Broughton added the finishing touch. After a Louis Corps effort was blocked and looped into the air, Broughton reacted quickest to strike a sweet volley home for Sandwich Town’s fourth goal of the afternoon. 4-1 to Sandwich Town!

The final whistle sparked huge celebrations from the players, staff and travelling supporters after an outstanding cup-winning display to cap off a remarkable season in style.

The victory seals a league and cup double for Sandwich Town FC in the 2025/26 season."

Marc then added the final thoughts in summing up the day and the season:

"Throughout the season, the lads have shown incredible dedication, motivation and determination to be successful.

Reaching two quarter-finals, winning the league and now lifting the cup is a fantastic achievement, and I honestly couldn’t be prouder of this team.

Every single player has contributed to what has been a brilliant season for the football club, both on and off the pitch.

We now have a real foundation to build from and continue growing the club to compete and be successful season after season.

Finally, thank you to all the players, club staff, family and friends who have supported both myself and the lads throughout the season. Your support has meant everything to us.
